The way we prove who we are is about to change. For decades, digital identification has become fragmented national systems. In addition, it depended on manual processes and digitization of physical documents.
With Regulation (EU) 2024/1183, the scenario changes. This regulation, known as eIDAS 2.0, established the European Digital Identity Scheme. Thus, the European Union sets a new standard: the European Digital Identity Card.
To this end, each Member State shall be required to provide at least one certified Wallet. The deadline shall be 24 months from the entry into force of the implementing acts, i.e. predictably until the end of 2026. In addition, no later than 36 months after these acts, therefore until about 24 December 2027, regulated sector organizations are obliged to accept the Wallet as a means of identification. This acceptance takes place at the request of the respective holder in accordance with Article 5f of eIDAS 2.0.
In this White Paper, we explain what the European Digital Identity Card consists of. We also clarify its role in the digital transformation of citizens and, above all, of organisations. Finally, we present the main cases of use, with natural emphasis on the financial sector, without forgetting other areas of high value.
Still, the European Digital Identity Card does not dispense with Qualified Trust Service Providers (PQSC). On the contrary, it industrializes the search for what a PQSC is able to do. That is, prove identities, certify attributes and sign or seal with legal value.
